When Steven D. (Duane) Smalley was just a kid at home, he ended up with a pig called Daisy May. Daisy May was the runt of the litter and Steve was going to kill it when it was born because he said it wouldn't live. Duane and Zelda took the runt in the house where Zelda made a box for it and they fed it on a bottle until it was big enough to be kept outside. As you can see, Steve was wrong, it didn't die and became the largest hog on the farm reaching almost 500 lbs. Steve finally said Daisy May had to go and they could either sell her or take her to the butcher. Zelda and Duane both agreed they could never eat breakfast again if it were Daisy May so she was taken to the local auction barn.
Steve Smalley loved to hunt quail and even though he was a pretty good shot, he wasn't as good as he like to tell his grandchildren he was. He had many bird dogs during his life but his favorite was a German Shorthair called Zip. He was a very well trained dog. When Steve got older and couldn't walk much, he would hunt from his tractor. Zip would circle the pasture, then freeze when he found some quail. Steve would drive over close, get off the tractor and flush the birds so he could get a shot. It is rare that a dog can hold still for that length of time without flushing the birds themself. Everyone agreed, Zip could hold a bird longer than any dog they had seen. Zip loved to hunt as much as Steve did and lived to an old age. Eventually both he and Steve got to where they could no longer walk far enough to hunt. When they got to that point, Steve would hook a trailer behind the tractor, lift Zip up on the trailer and together they would drive the pasture until Steve seen some quail. When they spotted the quail, Steve would help Zip off the trailer so he to could also hunt the birds without walking very far.
This is a picture of Duane Smalley when he was 6 mos old dressed in a slip. Those of you who know him now must admit he looks about the same, still no hair. Also when he wears a slip today their is no doubt. | | | |
